Tests to investigate the web slenderness limits for cold-formed RHS in bending
نویسنده
چکیده
Steel beam cross sections are normally classified according to the effect of local buckling on the moment capacity of the section. This is achieved by defining slenderness limits for the flange and the web. This paper describes a series of bending tests on cold-formed RHS to examine these limits. The resulting experimental relationship between web slenderness and plastic rotation capacity is given. It is found that the web slenderness limits in steel design specifications for compact sections are not conservative for RHS when used in plastic design. There is clear interaction between the flange and web slenderness which should be accounted for in the limits. A tentative proposal for a new compact web slenderness limit for RHS is suggested.

Bending Fatigue Tests and Finite Element Models of Steel Rectangular Hollow Sections [SRHS]
The Welding in cold formed areas is not only an open question for statically loaded sections (brittle fracture) but also for dynamically loaded structures (fatigue resistance). A lot of structures are subjected to dynamic loadings and unfortunately very little information about the influence of welding in the cold formed areas on fatigue resistance is available. In order to establish the fatigu...

There have been some experimental tests on hollow curved-steel struts with thin-walled square sections, in order to investigate their general behavior, particularly their capacity for bearing differing loads. One set of square tubes are cold-formed into segments of circular arcs with curvature radii, equal to 4000 mm. Different lengths of curved struts are fabricated so as to cover a practical ...

C and Z sections are two of the most common cold-formed steel shapes in use today. Accurate prediction of the bending performance of these sections is important for reliable and efficient cold-formed steel structures. The objective of this paper is to provide work towards design methods to predict both the loss of stiffness and the available ductility for cold-formed steel members subject to cross-section deformations resulting from local and distortional buckling. Existing design specifications provide some guidance on how to predict the stiffness of cold-formed steel members, but no guidance on their avail...

Lightweight steel framing is a method in housing and construction that have been widely used in lightweight steel construction. In this method, the structure is built by cold formed steel elements. They are cost-effective, light, and easy to assemble. However, the performance of lateral load resisting systems in cold-formed steel structures specially the behavior of cold-formed steel shear wall...
